No matter how arcane your interests are, you will be able to find videos on that topic on YouTube, usually voiced and produced by others who share the same interest.
In fact, YouTube ranked only behind Google as a source where most people search for video content.
The quality of the editing and production of these videos can vary, depending on the creator’s skillset; some are expert with mixing music so that it’s not obtrusive, and others are skilled at captioning and adding other visual effects.
When it’s done well, there’s nothing better.
However, when the videos are too “amateur” – especially in the sourcing of the voiceover – I tend to disengage. As an example, I recently took an interest in the dinosaur statues which were created for the New York World Fair in 1964 – and what eventually happened to them. I found a video on YouTube which – while supplying accurate and interesting information – I found the YouTuber who voiced it to be severely lacking in professionalism and listenability.
And as for the “workaround” that many video posters use – that of a text to speech utility – produces audio that is almost laughable.
Is it enough to be an authority on a topic? To have real enthusiasm for a subject? Or should YouTubers make an attempt to produce high quality, visually appealing and ultimately listenable material by outsourcing the very specialized skill of voicing to a professional?
I think it’s admirable to want to produce it all yourself – but the videos with high production values tend to get more love – and hiring a voiceover pro goes a long way to enhancing the videos you post. Here’s some points to consider:
A Professional Voice isn’t That Expensive
Prospective clients who approach me about voicing their explainer videos are usually pleasantly surprised at the rate I charge to voice a short non-commercial video – and price gets better with the increased volume/frequency with which you hire me. It’s not prohibitively expensive to do this right.
Hiring a Pro Takes the Pressure Off of You
I can almost hear the stress of multiple takes and the anxiety of handling both the technical aspects of the video and the voicing. Outsourcing the voicing of your videos takes the pressure off you and enables you to manage other aspects which need your focus and which, no doubt, are more in your wheelhouse.
The Turnaround is Fast and Product Quality is High
If you factor in the amount of time you spent “getting it right”, navigating through multiple takes and seemingly endless redos, you’ll soon appreciate the value of a pro and see the benefit of someone who spends their days in front of their mic. Voicing is a skillset; the pros can get through pages of text which would probably take you three times longer. We take direction, we welcome feedback, and we deliver a high quality product quickly.
The next time you’re in the position to launch an online video, ask yourself some questions about its listenability. Would you want to sit and listen to this? Does the voiceover guide the listener through the content in an unobtrusive way, or is it distracting and a deal-breaker.
Your audio *can* be well done and the voiceover can be as valuable an asset to your YouTube channel as good graphics and titling. When attention to professional detail is made, viewers will come away with a positive impression of your channel.
